SM Supermalls is taking sustainability to the next level, with SM City Bataan now housing a whopping 4,060 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels capable of generating 2,376,000 kW at peak capacity. As the global push for renewable energy intensifies, SM is proving that big businesses can make an even bigger impact by embracing cleaner, greener solutions.
Leading the Charge in Renewable Energy
Shopping malls are massive energy consumers, and SM recognizes the crucial role they can play in reducing their environmental footprint. That’s why the retail giant has been ramping up its solar power initiatives, cutting down on carbon emissions while also lowering energy costs. By converting sunlight directly into electricity, these solar PV systems are helping SM reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to a more sustainable Philippines.
Solar Power Expansion Across SM Malls
As of February 2025, SM has rolled out solar PV systems across 45 of its properties nationwide, with more installations in the pipeline. This large-scale adoption of solar energy isn’t just about keeping the lights on—it’s about reshaping the way malls operate, proving that commercial establishments can be both profitable and environmentally responsible.
Awards and Recognition for Sustainability Leadership
SM’s commitment to sustainability isn’t going unnoticed. The iconic SM Mall of Asia bagged the Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution at the 2024 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards, thanks to its 2.7 MW solar PV system—enough to power 1,790 households for an entire year.
Meanwhile, SM City Butuan made waves at the ASEAN Energy Awards 2024, earning recognition for its energy-efficient design and operations. Endorsed by the Department of Energy (DOE), the mall was honored for pioneering innovations in energy efficiency and conservation (EEC), further solidifying SM’s reputation as a sustainability leader.
Aligning with the DOE’s Renewable Energy Roadmap
Beyond its own sustainability goals, SM is actively supporting the DOE’s Renewable Energy Roadmap 2017-2040. With a vision to increase the Philippines’ renewable energy installed capacity to at least 20,000 MW by 2040, the roadmap aligns perfectly with SM’s expanding solar initiatives.
SM City Tanza, for example, now boasts 2,286 solar PV panels, generating a peak solar power output of 1,257.30 kW. This is just one of many malls playing a role in helping the country transition to clean energy.
Public-Private Partnerships Driving Green Innovation
SM’s solar push is made possible through strategic collaborations with solar PV system providers under the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Distributed Energy Resources program. These partnerships streamline the integration of renewable energy across SM malls, ensuring the transition to solar is both seamless and impactful.
“At SM, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a commitment. Our expanding solar portfolio reflects our dedication to a greener future, in collaboration with the DOE and our valued partners,” said SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance Group Engr. Liza Silerio.
Green Heat Corporation Director Glenn Tong, one of SM’s key solar partners, echoed this sentiment: “Together, we’re not just cutting costs—we’re actively shaping a more sustainable future for the Philippines.”
Setting the Standard for Sustainable Development
Beyond lowering energy costs and reducing carbon footprints, SM’s solar PV installations serve as a model for public-private partnerships (PPPs). By working hand-in-hand with the DOE, SM is tapping into technical expertise and financial incentives while helping the country meet its sustainability targets. This approach fosters innovation, generates jobs, and encourages other commercial establishments to follow suit.
DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara highlighted the importance of such collaborations: “The DOE has implemented sustainable energy development strategies nationwide, and the strong support from both private and public sectors is crucial in achieving our long-term goals.”
With SM leading the way, the future of sustainable retail in the Philippines looks brighter than ever.
