This year’s Panagbenga Festival in Baguio has been a stunning display of everything that makes the City of Pines a true cultural gem. From vibrant art exhibits to mouthwatering food, the 2025 festivities have been nothing short of spectacular. It’s a celebration of the city’s rich heritage, artistic spirit, and the creativity that blooms every year.
A Tribute to Kidlat de Guia
One of the most powerful pieces in this year’s Panagbenga was a striking sculpture of a lightning bolt, crafted from brilliant yellow and blue tiles. This masterpiece serves as a tribute to Kidlat de Guia, a beloved Baguio photographer and artist who passed away in Madrid, Spain. It’s an emotional homage to his legacy, and the bold design captures his unique spirit and contributions to the arts.
The Mighty Bhutens Art Exhibit: Where Cordillera Spirit Shines
The Mighty Bhutens Art Exhibit was another festival highlight, channeling the lively spirit of the Cordilleras. Featuring works by Kabunyan de Guia, Guiller Lagac, and Oliver Olivete, collectively known as The Mighty Bhutens, the exhibit explored themes of heritage through playful and spontaneous designs. Inspired by National Artist Kidlat Tahimik, the exhibit brings the culture of the region to life in a way that’s both fresh and deeply rooted in tradition. It’s a must-see for anyone who appreciates art that speaks to the soul.
Satisfy Your Appetite at the Food Truck Fest
For food lovers, the Food Truck Fest at The Drive is where the flavors of Panagbenga really come to life. Local MSMEs showcased an incredible array of delicious dishes, from street food to mouthwatering meals. It’s the perfect spot for foodies looking to sample the best of Baguio’s culinary offerings—each bite is an experience of its own, full of flavor and creativity.
A Treasure Trove at the Food & Crafts Fair
The Food & Crafts Fair, running until March 3, is another must-visit for festival-goers. With an assortment of artisanal accessories, local delicacies, and unique pasalubong (souvenirs), it’s the perfect place to find one-of-a-kind items and support local MSMEs. Whether you’re picking up a handcrafted piece or indulging in some tasty treats, you’re guaranteed to leave with something special.
Art at the Heart of the Festival
Art lovers were in for a treat, thanks to the variety of creative activities that dotted the festival’s calendar. From the Family Art Day, where families painted their Panagbenga memories, to the Painting Competition, which captured the festival’s energy and beauty on canvas, the festival was a celebration of creativity for all ages. The Arts and Crafts activity also encouraged students to repurpose past Panagbenga decors into sustainable art, sparking inspiration and encouraging eco-consciousness.
Cultural Performances: A Celebration of Heritage
As if the sights weren’t enough, the cultural performances added a whole new layer to the Panagbenga vibe. Local groups like the Day Eng Cultural Group and the University of Baguio BIBAK Ubbun Kaafuan filled the air with music and dance, offering a dynamic display of the Cordilleran spirit. Their performances were a perfect reminder of the city’s rich cultural heritage and how it continues to thrive in the hearts of its people.
Pawstival: A Day for the Fur Babies
For the pet lovers, Pawstival was a highlight. Pet parents and their furry friends gathered for a day of fun, games, and the much-anticipated costume contest. Watching pets strut their stuff in creative outfits was a heartwarming sight, creating moments of joy and connection between humans and their beloved companions.
Weaving Workshops and Blooming Weaves Fashion Show
The weaving workshop, led by master weaver Cathy Ekid from Bontoc, gave festival-goers a chance to try their hand at backstrap weaving, a craft that has been passed down through generations. The workshop was part of the Blooming Weaves fashion show and exhibit, which celebrated Cordillera’s weaving traditions with a modern twist. Designers from the Fashion Designers Alliance Cordillera showcased stunning eco-conscious pieces, featuring intricate handwoven fabrics and traditional techniques like pedal loom weaving and ikat dyeing.
Hiraya: Dreams in Bloom
The Hiraya: Dreams in Bloom exhibit was a visual feast for art enthusiasts, with over 60 pieces from 48 Pasakalye artists capturing dreams and aspirations through floral-inspired designs. The collection beautifully blended tradition with contemporary style, showcasing the incredible talent of local artists while exploring universal themes of hope and beauty.
Grand Float Parade: A Tribute to Bountiful Harvests
The Grand Float Parade on February 23 was the highlight of the festival, with 44 gorgeously decorated floats celebrating the beauty of the harvest season. SM City Baguio’s float, inspired by a cornucopia of bountiful harvests, perfectly encapsulated this year’s theme, “Blossoms Beyond Boundaries.” The parade was a testament to the city’s creativity and the rich agricultural heritage of the Cordilleras.
Fireworks and Lights: A Magical Atmosphere
No Panagbenga celebration would be complete without fireworks, and this year’s display did not disappoint. Along with stunning floral displays and light installations, the festival’s atmosphere was truly magical. As the night sky lit up with vibrant colors, visitors couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder and joy, making the experience even more unforgettable.
