Manila Bay’s battle against pollution just got a major boost! SM Prime Holdings (SM Prime), in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), has officially turned over a state-of-the-art catamaran trash boat to help tackle water pollution head-on. The handover, which took place on January 31, included the delivery of essential navigation and safety gear, as well as cleaning tools to support the effort.
This 30-foot, high-tech vessel is built to efficiently collect and haul up to a ton of waste, making it a game-changer in the ongoing mission to clean up the iconic bay. The boat will be operated by the DENR Metropolitan Environmental Office – South Zone, reinforcing the agency’s ability to clear floating debris and protect Manila Bay’s fragile ecosystem.
Public-Private Collaboration for a Cleaner Manila Bay
The donation highlights the power of public-private partnerships in addressing environmental issues. By enhancing DENR’s cleanup efforts, SM Prime is helping push the fight against water pollution forward. The catamaran will significantly boost waste collection efficiency, supporting the broader goal of restoring Manila Bay’s ecological health.
“This catamaran is a testament to our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship,” said SM Supermalls Vice President Engr. Liza Silerio. “We believe in the power of collaboration to create a sustainable future for our communities.”
This initiative aligns with SM Prime’s ongoing sustainability programs, including the Parañaque Adopt-a-River project, reinforcing the importance of collective action in achieving lasting environmental improvements.
A Milestone for Manila Bay’s Rehabilitation
The handover event saw key figures in attendance, including DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, Undersecretary Jonas Leones, DENR NCR Regional Executive Director Michael Drake Matias, and other high-ranking officials, alongside representatives from SM Prime. Their presence underscored the significance of this collaboration in protecting and preserving Manila Bay for future generations.
The newly acquired catamaran trash boat is expected to play a crucial role in the DENR’s ongoing efforts, setting an example of how government agencies and private companies can come together to tackle pressing environmental challenges. With projects like these, a cleaner, healthier Manila Bay isn’t just a vision—it’s becoming a reality.
